Sands China Care Ambassadors Help Live-Alone Elderly with Spring Cleaning

(Macao, Jan. 23, 2018) – A group of around 70 Sands China Care Ambassadors helped clean the homes of 61 live-alone elderly at Seac Pai Van public housing in Coloane Sunday, spending time with them in an annual spring cleaning activity in preparation for Chinese New Year.

It is the ninth consecutive year that volunteers from Sands China have visited the homes of live-alone elderly, all of whom are users of the Peng On Tung Tele-Assistance programme organised by The General Union for Neighbourhood Associations. Sands China Ltd. has supported the programme since 2010, donating a total of approximately MOP 1.6 million to date, benefiting nearly 5,000 live-alone elderly. The funds are used to support people with financial difficulties to use the service and also go toward helping the programme develop more value-added services.

Bringing cleaning supplies along with them on Sunday, the Care Ambassadors chatted with the elderly residents they visited, and swept, mopped, and scrubbed their homes to prepare for the upcoming Year of the Dog, as is the traditional Chinese custom. They cleaned some of the harder-to-reach places like areas too high for the residents to easily reach, which was met with great appreciation. While there, they also continued their annual tradition of presenting Chinese New Year gift packs purchased from the Fuhong Society of Macau, containing useful staples like oil, grain and noodles.

“It’s important that we remember to take care of the older generation, and helping the elderly with their spring cleaning is one of my favourite volunteer activities of the year,” said one of the Care Ambassadors. “It’s a good feeling to be part of a community where people are concerned about one another, and that’s one of the reasons why I decided to become a Care Ambassador.”

Founded in August 2009, the Sands China Care Ambassador programme aims to give Sands China employees an opportunity to serve the local community by organising community activities and initiatives that work toward creating a better Macao. With a current membership of more than 1,600 volunteers from across all Sands China properties – Sands® Macao, The Venetian® Macao, The Plaza™ Macao, Sands® Cotai Central and The Parisian Macao – the Sands China Care Ambassadors have contributed close to 12,000 hours of voluntary community service in more than 50 activities in 2017. Sands China Ltd. considers initiatives like its annual spring cleaning activity as central to its commitment toward social causes and community involvement; it is one of the many ways the company’s team of volunteers expresses its care and spreads warmth to vulnerable and less-advantaged groups in the Macao community.

Sands China’s community work is part of Sands Cares, the global corporate citizenship programme of parent company Las Vegas Sands Corp.
